The Monument Gardens, Camp Street,Juan Carlos Medina Jersey, Georgetown, came alive last evening with a mixture of music, food, dance and song, as scores turned out to commemorate Arrival Day and Pushpanjali 16. The evening’s proceeding commenced with a classic display of tassa drumming, a series of prayers and the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon to commission an Open Air Museum.According to Dr.Yesu Persaud,David Silva Manchester City Jersey, the museum was set up to encourage the youths to learn about culture and practices. Also it highlights the journey of indentured labours to Guyana.The commissioning of the museum was down by 89-year-old Ms. Chalma from Leonora who began working on the sugar estate at the age of seven.The event also saw various persons being honoured for their service to the country. Some of these awardees included,Miguel Layun Jersey, Rudy Insanally, Tota Mangar, Haimant Persaud,Jesus Manuel Corona Mexico Jersey, K.A Juman Yassin, Kamayadial Kirpalani, Shrimatttie Chandrawattie Maraj and Nadira Nirwani.Other persons were also given Certificates of Appreciation.Speaking at the ceremony also was former Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, who related the challenges, the endurance and commitment of the indentured labours who came to Guyana.Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan agreed to speak on behalf of the Prime Minister,Julian Weigl Dortmund Jersey, Moses Nagamootoo, who could not make it to the ceremony.Ramjattan in his remarks made reference Ramkarran’s earlier observations. Ramjattan said that while it is important to look back at history, Guyanese should not linger in the past.“Like chauffeur in every car,Daley Blind Jersey, you simply cannot remain watching that rear-view mirror – you’re going to crash!”He also spoke about the desire for national unity and peace as Guyana is on the verge of celebrating its 50th Anniversary.Ramjattan stated that as Guyanese, “we must watch that windscreen in front of us so that we can keep our eyes as to where we want to go”.
