Statistics have revealed that for the period January to date, there were 103 road deaths in 2011 compared to 108 deaths for the same period last year.Though, this represents a reduction,Malik McDowell Jersey, the Guyana National Road Safety Council is still dissatisfied. “Every life is valuable and persons should take this Month’s road safety theme ‘Drive Wise and Save lives’ seriously.”This is according to Romona Doorgen, Co-ordinator,Budda Baker Youth Jersey, who emphasised that there were 94 accidents with 103 deaths, among them 10 children and 38 pedestrians. In 2010 there were 94 accidents with 108 deaths including seven children and 36 pedestrians.Doorgen said that there were fewer deaths in 2009 than in 2010 and 2011. The visit was part of the Council’s Road Safety Month activities.During the visit, the concern for effective training on the usage of All Terrian Vehicles (ATVs) in the Hinterland Regions was raised. Doorgen noted that several persons receiving treatment at the hospital were victims of accidents involving ATVs.She said that those operating ATVs in the hinterland use them like a motorbike. Though, lately it became mandatory for ATVs to be licensed, some persons are operating them unlicensed.Doorgen added that there needs to be stricter traffic rules in the hinterland. Systems should be put in place for operators of ATVs to be licensed after receiving the requisite training.Today,Chad Williams Jersey, the Council will be conducting a walk for victims of road fatalities. The walk will commence 16:00 hours sharp and the night vigil will begin 18:45 ending at 20:00 hours.The Ministry of Home Affairs along with the Road Safety Associations will also be commemorating the numerous fatalities that have occurred on the roadways.Not all accidents end with fatalities, but to the friends and family of those who have experienced that loss,Sergio Aguero Jersey, Sunday is their chance to bring awareness on the ongoing issue of road safety, Doorgen said.
