Continuous rainfall and the Essequibo River overflowing its banks are threatening the livelihood of the 250 Rockstone residents, particularly those directly involved in tourism and domestic and aquarium fishing.The water level is three feet high on the road going to Anarika and 12 feet high at the waterfront,Gregory van der Wiel Jersey, says Chris Ford, a villager.According to Lynette Benn,Sebastian Giovinco Toronto Shirts, Public Relations Officer of the Rockstone Tourism Association, “Where the flood is, it’s affecting the exact area where we operate our tourism activity. The guest house is located by the Rockstone Landing and all the beaches which are used as tourist destinations are covered.”Gluck Island,Bernd Leno Jersey, where bird watching is exercised,Ilkay Gundogan Jersey, is flooded. She noted that the road leading from Linden to Rockstone is in a deplorable condition,Joao Carlos Teixeira Jersey, deterring tourists from entering the community.Rockstone is a popular area to game fish and is home of the famous Lukanani and Arapaima. Many persons enter the community on a weekly basis to engage in sport fishing, outside of the annual Rockstone Fish Festival which attracts thousands. However, owing to the rising water level and the continuous downpour this activity has been interrupted, putting boat operators out of business.Benn emphasised that tourism related activities in the community garners approximately $500,000 per month. Last year the flood situation caused the community to lose $1M to rehabilitation works.She noted that the community may lose more money this year as the water level is higher and the flooding started earlier than last year.Nonetheless, erosion to the landing may be less since revetment works were executed last year after that flood. Approximately 32 persons who are directly employed in the tourism sector are out of jobs. Five food courts were forced to close; 20 part-time tour guides and boat operators, and guest house employees were sent packing.Fay Allicock, a Councilor, stated that no drinking water is available in the community and people have already left Rockstone in search of springs for clean water.In addition,Samir Nasri Jersey, the sanitary condition is threatening as pit latrines are flooded.
