Former Chairman of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company (GTM), Harold Davis, died “peacefully” in his sleep early yesterday morning at his city home.Davis,Martin Demichelis Manchester City Jersey, 88, had not been well after suffering a stroke, his wife, Mayleen said yesterday. He had difficulty breathing when the couple retired to bed around 11pm on Tuesday, she added.Harold DavisSpeaking from her New Market Street home yesterday, Mrs. Davis said she checked on him about two hours later and realized that he passed away. She said his death was quiet and peaceful.Davis began his career as a teacher at the Rosignol Government School. He came to Georgetown in 1947 and taught at the Trinity and Bedford Methodist Schools. He left teaching to pursue studies at the Ohio State University,Zach Banner Colts Jersey, obtaining a BSC (Bachelors) in Social Administration and later, a Masters Degree in Sociology.He returned to Guyana in 1958 and joined Bookers Sugar Estate the following year as the Personnel Manager, working at Skeldon. He was later transferred to Georgetown, taking up a position as the company’s Education and Training Officer.According to Mrs. Davis, her husband became Chairman of the company when it was nationalized and rebranded GuySuCo on May 26, 1976. He also served as Chairman of the Sugar Association of the Caribbean (SAC) from 1980 to 1990,Curtis Samuel Womens Jersey, as well as the Chairman of the Consultative Association of Guyana Industries Limited (CAGI).He was a member of the Council of the University of Guyana (UG), and in 1991 he became Pro- Chancellor and a member of the Board of Governors, serving for 13 years.
