However, the World Day for Administrative Professionals (formerly Secretaries’ Day) will be observed globally today.Addressing an attentive gathering yesterday, Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir, underscored that the work of the administrative professional is the hub around which most businesses operate. He highlighted that during the course of a busy work day, managers have little time to ensure that certain matters are effectively executed.“It then becomes the duty of the administrative professional to ensure the wheels of the company continue to turn, churning out production, turning out the various services, creating jobs and building the company and the economy.”As such the Minister asserted that this group of professionals has a very vital role, even as he speculated that some may not be paid sufficiently for the service they offer. However, this may not always be the determining factor to a professional’s performance as he emphasised the importance of ambition.“Ambition is a great motivator. Many persons don’t like people because they think they are too ambitious. Because they are ambitious they will do anything to realise that goal they have set themselves. I see nothing at all wrong with ambition.”In addition to ambition, the Minister said that attitude is a crucial complementary factor which has been aptly amplified in the GAAP code of ethics which was gleefully recited by the gathering at the start of the seminar yesterdayGAAP was founded by a group of secretaries who attended a seminar during Secretaries Week in April 1983. Those secretaries realised the need for improving the standards of the secretarial profession in Guyana and with the help of the then Lions President Dr Walter Chin, Mr Hubert Dyer and Mrs Christobel Hughes, the National Association of Secretaries came into being.
